Happy World Book Day

When I was younger I used to love dressing up as my favourite book characters for school – most popular in my time was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz or Madeline from Madeline. However sadly there isn’t dress up at work so I thought I would share with you my three favourite classic books.

The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald

I studied this during my English Literature ALevel and fell in love with the roaring 20’s. An old school romance novel full of treachery, seduction and a good dose of champagne, The Great Gatsby tells the story of Nick Carraway and his friendship with the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, who is in love with Nicks cousin Daisy. What I love most about this book is the way the characters are written; you never fully love or despise any of them. Each character has both their good points as well as their character flaws just like real people it adds a whole new dimension to the story.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle

I have always been a fan of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and the Hound of the Baskervilles has to have been one of the first ones I ever read. They are good old fashioned mysterious written with wit and eloquence. The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is hilarious but also heart warming. These stories are timeless and if you have never ventured into the world of 221B then The Hound of the Baskervilles is a great one to start with.

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

I wrote my final English Lit essay on Alice in Wonderland and although it is not the most adult book out there it still remains a favourite. I have read this story over hundred times and love collecting vintage additions. This story is really about escapism, nature vs nurture and identity along with other things all wrapped up into a quaint children’s book. I love this story because its perfect for boy adults and children, a throughly good read for children but full of hidden themes for adults.

What are your favourite classics?

Healthy Cake?!

P1210591

Don’t worry I haven’t suddenly turned into a cooking blog but I did want to share with you a gluten free cake that I have been loving to bake recently. It’s a flourless chocolate cake so perfect for any gluten intolerant people and its so simple to make.

P1210583

You will need

– 100g dark chocolate

– 3 eggs

– 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

– 42g Lurpak

-50g Caster Sugar

P1210585

First measure out all your ingredients and pre-heat the oven to 150 C – its a lot lower than when normally baking but you have to cook this for longer due to the lack of flour!

P1210588

Separate the eggs into yolks and whites, leave the yolks to one side for the moment.

P1210597

Take the egg whites and whip them up into stiff peaks – if you have an electric whisk USE IT! My arm ached after doing it by hand!

P1210596

Melt the Lurpak and the chocolate together either in the microwave or the old school way over a pan of boiling hot water!

P1210600

Combine the melted chocolate with the egg yolks.

P1210603

Then slowly add the egg whites until you are left with more of a batter than a cake mix.

P1210605

Add the vanilla essence to make sure there is a bit of sweetness mixed in with dark chocolate.

P1210606

Pour the cake batter into a tin and pop in the oven for 50 minutes!

P1210611

It’s a cake but not as you know it! What I love the most about this is that it’s gluten free but it’s also pretty low in fat seeing as I didn’t use actual butter!

Have you tried any flour free baking?

The Perfect Lip Duo

M.A.C Whirl|Soap&Glory Naked Beige.

I never used to be a lip liner girl but I fell in love with Whirl by M.A.C and now I can’t stop using it! M.A.C liners are so creamy and don’t drag on the lips so it makes lining the lips really simple. Sometimes I just fill my entire lips in with Whirl but if I want something a bit glossier and moisturising then I love using Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lipstick in Naked Beige.Packed full of Vitamin E and Shea Butter they make your lips feel amazing with the added plus of great pigmentation and a pretty good wear-ability. Naked Beige is a lovely pink toned nude with just a hint of brown making it the perfect 90’s nude – the above photo is making it look pinker than it is!

The perfect lip duo.

Best concealer ever?!|Maybelline The Eraser Eye

P1210470

 Maybelline The Eraser Eye Concealer£7.99

Its not secret that I love concealer and this beauty from Maybelline is fast becoming a holy grail product.

The main selling point for me is that it is super full coverage, it’s perfect for use on dark circles but also on any blemishes or imperfections. A super creamy formula that blends perfectly with either a beauty blender or your fingers. I know a lot of people are turned off by the sponge applicator but that really doesn’t bother me at all. The only thing that slightly annoys me is that it only comes in two shades – Light and Nude(I think there may be more shades in the US). I have both but Light is really the only one that works on my pale skin tone, Nude is too dark so I use it as a cream contour.

Coat- Christian Dior(similar)|Trousers – H&M|Crop Top – H&M(similar)|Platforms – ASOS(similar)|Hat – Topshop(similar).

As much as I love my blue jeans and white shirt combination sometimes I like to try out a different silhouette and when I found this gorgeous Dior over-coat in my dads wardrobe I knew I had to showcase it. It’s obviously very oversized on me but in a way that it doesn’t swamp my figure rather compliment it. I paired it with two H&M basics that I love. I have the crop top in lot’s of colours I like the fact that its a slightly longer crop top so is perfect with high-waisted bottoms like these comfy black trousers.

In keeping with the monochrome colour scheme – no surprises there I popped on my huge ASOS platforms, still love these babies and they had a nice bit of clunk to the outfit plus my favourite hat of the moment my Topshop straw bowler. On my lips to add a pop of colour is Revlon Provocateur.

The Easy Roast – Various websites.

The thought of cooking a whole roast can be pretty daunting however I am well practiced in the art of one tray roasting. I have used various websites but my favourite is the BBC Good Food recipe, it uses a whole chicken but I prefer to substitute in two chicken breasts; less waste. Sunday roast doesn’t need to be a chore!

I love Sorted Food their web series is amazing but I also recently bought their book Beginners get Sorted its amazing for people who don’t normally cook or for someone who needs some basic recipes that will still impress.

Basic Homous – Sorted Food

I never knew how easy homous was to make but it really is super simple and takes around five minutes, plus its packed full of protein and is the perfect healthy snack or pre-dinner nibble. Sadly I can’t find the recipe online but I would highly suggest buying the book!

Smokey Bacon and Tomato Soup – Sorted Food

I had also never made soup before and yet again Sorted proved how easy it is to make. I love this twist on the classic tomato soup; adding bacon gives it this whole other flavour. I would suggest adding some double cream to the finished product as it makes it much more, well creamy!

Sausage and Three Bean Stew – Sorted Food

Not the most photogenic dish but this is an amazing winter warmer. Stuffed full of protein and fibre it may not look super healthy but it is. Again a very easy dish to make but you will have to buy the recipe book to find out how.

Squid with Pasta in Tomato Sauce

Saying I haven’t written any of my own recipes this is something I cobbled together. I love seafood and squid is one of my all time favourites luckily I can get frozen squid tubes which I fry before adding to some gluten free pasta with a shop bought (shhhh don’t tell anyone) tomato sauce.

P1210427

Squid in Black Bean Sauce with Noodles

Again a very simple dish that I love to have for a quick lunch. Stir fry the squid with some vegetables before adding some noodles and yet again a shop bought sauce. Cooking really isn’t that difficult especially when all you have to do is chuck everything in one pan and bam its done!

Anyone else got any recipes they think I would love or do you run a cooking blog, leave your links in the comments box because I would love to read them!
