Bamboo is one of the most sustainable products on the market especially for clothing but why is it actually better than others?
From an environmental point of view bamboo helps clean the air we breathe. Bamboo grass absorbs five time more CO2 from the air than the equivalent amount of hardwood trees. Two thirds of the carbon is stored in the soil and root system which – unlike trees and cotton – isn’t dug up when the bamboo is harvested so the carbon stays in the ground.Bamboo can grow to full size in just 3-4 months, compared to standard trees which can take 30+ years to grow. It also doesn’t need pesticides, so it can grow without causing damage to the surrounding ecosystems. And because bamboo stays fresh for longer, it needs less washing.
If that all sounds rather scientific then the other reasons why Bamboo is one of the better options are a little more tangible. It’s super soft, it absorbs moisture to keep you dry, it’s anti static and is kind to sensitive skin. If you are wearing bamboo sports gear it helps regulate temperature as it can be dense yet breathable. It can be a little more expensive but it also lasts a lot longer.
Have you tried any bamboo brands yet? If your looking to dip a toe in the water why not try bamboo underwear.
