Discovering A Wine Bar in a Public Toilet…

Last time we spoke out about restaurants for dates I was talking all about my new favourite Vegan friendly restaurant however this time I have a carnivores dream.

The Mr and I were both so busy in September that we were very much having to snatch whatever time we could get together. Then suddenly we ended up with a spontaneous whole evening together so we knew this meant a proper date night was in order! When I say ‘proper’ date night I mean getting dressed up and getting on a train somewhere, not just sitting in our pants eating pizza in bed.

This jumpsuit may be my new favourite item in my wardrobe! It was a gift for my birthday, so it’s not breaking any of the No Spend rules. It’s comfortable, stylish and doesn’t swamp my petite frame plus you can dress it down with trainers or dress it up with heels.

Okay so enough about clothes let’s talk about food. We jumped on a train and headed for Clapham Common, found the slightly hidden staircase and entered WC. Yes WC is an old public toilet, but it also sells the most amazing wine and charcuterie.

The Mr is much more of a wine connoisseur than I am so I let him choose whilst I focused on the food. He picked a lovely Cotes du Rhone but the wine list changes all the time so I would ask for a recommendation if you aren’t sure. They also have a lovely cocktail list, craft beers and spirits but frankly if you’re going to a wine and characeturie bar it would be silly not to order those exact things to start with.

This place is very much a sharing is caring approach. We choose the Cheese & Characteurie Board, three delicious cheeses, three equally delicious cured meats – again the varieties change weekly but paired perfectly, the creaminess of the cheese is cut through with the saltiness of the cured meat. Served with cornichons, chutney and sourdough. We also picked Tartiflette á L’Epoisses – try saying that after a few glasses of wine! Apparently it’s a classic from the Savoie region. Roasted potato, garlic & rosemary, topped with hot oozing Epoisse cheese from Burgundy, Salami & Sauvignon Blanc, it was delicious!

I could have indulged in more cheese however we noticed they had a dessert on offer and decided to finish up with something sweet. A very decadent chocolate & cointreau truffle served with homemade candied orange and hazelnut brittle which paired perfectly with my espresso martini. Definitely one to share as it’s incredibly rich. We emerged back up to street level in search of more cocktails, which we found at one of our favourite places Adventure Bar.

WC is the perfect place for a 1st or 50th date, drinks with friends, after work drinks or a pre-theatre bite to eat. There are a few booths that are bookable but everything else is on a first come first serve basis.

Do you prefer nights out or nights in for date night?
